Today, I'd like to talk about a few add-ins I've been using in my smoothies:
Maca: I first heard about maca on Martha Stewart Radio (of which I am, believe it or not, a fan). Chris Kilham, The Medicine Hunter was on Whole Living talking about the plants he has worked with around the world and maca was one he repeatedly raved about. Maca is a food, not a drug, and it has been used in Peru for centuries for stamina, energy and vitality. Another benefit of maca is increased sexual health and libido.
Flaxseed Meal: Flax seeds are well know for their health benefits. Besides being high in B vitamins, it's a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, specifically alpha lineolic acid (ALA). Flaxseed is also a great source of fiber. Flaxseed Meal is simply ground flaxseeds. I want to experiment with soaking these first. I have read that they can be used as a substitute for eggs in recipes if soaked, and perhaps they would contribute to the smooth-ness of the smoothie this way.
Brewer's Yeast: This is a fairly new supplement to me, but a friend asked me to order it for her, and as I did some research on it I decided to get some for myself. I could not possibly list all the vitamins and trace minerals that brewer's yeast provides. The Twinlab label states that "One heaping tablespoon provices all the essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals and trace elements." I figure if I get a heaping tablespoon of this per day, I should not be deficient in any good thing. I note that it provides 60% of the daily reccomended value of folic acid, which is especially important for women of child bearing age.
Nutritive add-ins I plan to try: I have not yet, but would like to try chia seeds, hemp seeds, and cacao nibs in my smoothies. If you have reccomendations or experiences with any smoothie add-ins, please leave a comment!
All supplements mentioned can be ordered through Friendly D's Oddities. I will be pleased as punch to carry these and any other supplements in the store if there is just one person who needs them to be available. Thank you!
